New Labour Union Emerges
The General Secretary of National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Comrade Joe Ajaero, yesterday announced a new labour movement named United Labour Congress of Nigeria (ULC) that would protect the interest Nigerian workers.
Speaking at the ULC inaugural delegate conference in Lagos, Comrade Ajaero stated that the movement would not be contesting with any labour organisation or group.
According to him, the issue of fraction is over. We are doing this because of the exigency of the moment. People work without salary amongst other issues.
The affiliates that formed United Labour Congress of Nigeria (ULC) include: National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), NUEE, Nigeria Union of Mine Workers, NUBIFIE, Nigeria Union of Road Workers (NURTW), National Union of Lottery Agents and Employees (NULAE) to mention afew.
As the time of naming the new labour movement, the number of unions were 18. The new President of ULC is Comrade Joe Ajaero while Deputy President is Comrade Igwe Achese, the President of NUPENG.
Addressing the movement as ULC President, Ajaero promised to work with other trade unions saying they are ready to fight for the interest of workers in line with the constitution of Nigeria.
“We are calling on the National Assembly to review all policies that are not beneficiary to the workers. When people are idle, it herald different social vices. We promised to serve the people”, he added.
In his reaction, the Deputy President of ULC, Comrade Igwe Achese said, “we have waited for one and half years and I see that it is only truth that can send us free. It is sad that workers are being owned salaries. You ask where is the labour with the issues going on in the country and I said we have a responsibility.
“We are here to celebrate the beginning of hope. How long are we going to wait and what is our responsibility as labour leaders”, he asked.
