NCC Laments Rising Wave Of Cyber Crime
Disturbed by rising wave of cybercrime in the country, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC ), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta Thursday disclosed that the Commission has initiated a process to establish an Internet Industry Code of Practice for Internet Service providers in the country.
Speaking at the 109th Edition of the Consumer Outreach Programme organised by the Commission in Osogbo Danbatta who spoke through the Deputy Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau Alhaji Ismail Adedigba said the code is a regulatory interventions which is expected to ensure the country ‘s Cyber space against imminent threats from cyber attackers .
According to him, the code would also address issues such as online Child protections, privacy and data protection among others.
He noted that the theme “mitigating Effects of Cybercrimes :The Roles of Telecom Consumers ” is carefully chosen to sensitize Telecom Consumers on the rising wave of Cybercrime in its various forms, the dangers it poses and the roles Consumers should play.
The Vice Chairman, NCC said in line with the Commission mandate, it will continually educate and enlighten the Consumers on industry issues.
Also speaking at the forum, the Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau Mrs Felicia Onwuegbuchulam stressed that the Commission will continue to highlight the threats of Cybercrime to all the users of telecoms services and to sensitize the Consumers on Criminal hackers.
She noted that Cyber space covers everything consumers do online or with computing devices including mobile phones, tablets and personal computers.
Onwuegbuchulam reminded Consumers that business and individuals in every country rely on Information and Communication Technology for their day-to-day activities, where Internet is playing a key role in interconnectivity of devices.
The Director equally noted that the Commission is conscious of the dishonest individuals, who are bent on using the Internet for illegal activities.
She said efforts are on to ensure that Cybercrime in the country are curb to ensure credible cyber usage for all Nigerians.
In her lecture, Mrs Nura Awe of Consumer Advocacy Group warned service consumers on the danger inherent in the activities of cyber fraudsters.
She cautioned consumers on transactions and interaction whether social or financial as cybercriminals are highly educated and smart.
She advocated the introduction of education and campaign against cyber crime in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions through outreach programs as most of the cybercriminals are undergraduates with knowledge of high technology management.
