NBA Urges Customs, Police To Probe Lagos-Benin Road Shooting
The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has tasked the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, and the Inspector General of Police, IGP, to investigate the circumstances surrounding last Sunday’s killing of a Nigerian by a Customs operative on the Benin-Lagos Express road.
NBA also accused the custom personnel operating in that part of the country of allegedly “being in the business of extorting motorists and passengers on the road,” adding that the “shameful act paints the country in a very bad light, and it must stop.”
The association in the statement by its Publicity Secretary, Kunle Edun, noted that the protection of lives and properties of Nigerians was the responsibility of government, warning that the lives of Nigerians should not be cut short by trigger-happy armed security personnel who have no business being on the road.
It said: “The NBA calls on the Inspector General of Police, the National Security Adviser, NSA, and the leadership of the Nigerian Customs Service to quickly intervene in this matter by setting up an investigation panel that will unravel the circumstances that led to the killing of the Nigerian.
“The reported killing is unjustified and most reckless. We also demand that all persons involved in this dastardly act must be made to face the wrath of the law.
This killing must not be swept under the carpet like others.”
