N13.8m Salary Received By Senators In Order- Tinubu
Senator Oluremi Tinubu representing Lagos Central Senatorial district on Friday justified the 13.8 million salary received monthly by the Nigerian Senators, saying the payment caters for so many things.
The lawmaker who spoke on the issue at the 25th Town Hall meeting tagged, “Gender Equity and the Right To Economic Freedom” organised by the Senator in Lagos noted that a lot of people needed to be empowered.
She said.” Out of this money we pay house rent, constituency office bill, transportation and apart from these, everything is monetised. The House only provide one car for each Senator.
“Does a minister or Commissioner has one car? People make a lot of noise when there is nothing. I have been consistent with the Town hall meeting and all the money I have been spending including empowering people is from this money.”
His counterpart from the House of Representatives, Hon. Olajide Jimoh representing Lagos Mainland Federal constituency added, “I am not collecting jumbo pay. My salary is legal and also embedded in the budget.”
It would be recalled that Shehu Sani, Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly revealed that he and his colleagues received N13.5 million monthly as running cost.
Meanwhile, Senator Tinubu called for female replacement for her position after the completion of her tenure.
” All we ask is for inclusiveness in governance, allocation of appointments, policy making, and all other aspects of leadership to incorporate the benefits of gender in all levels of decision making.
” However, there is still a long way to go. An analysis of statistics of Nigerian women holding public office shows that 14, approximately 4 per cent of 360 members of the House of Representatives are women; seven, approximately 6.4 per cent of 109 members of the Nigerian Senators are women; of the 36 federal ministers; five are women.
“Beyond public office, analysis of sex ratio indicates that there are fewer women in management positions than men. It will be a distortion of facts and history to fail to acknowledge that we are not where we were”, she noted.
Senator Tinubu empowered 130 women under the Widows Economic Empowerment Scheme (WEES) to bolster an existing trade or start a petty trade.
