My Government Never Plotted To Kill Bamaiyi -Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday reacted to the allegation made by the former Chief of Army Staff, General Ishaya Bamaiyi, that his government wanted to kill the army chief.
The former president who made the clarification yesterday while playing host to members of the Correspondents Chapel of Ogun NUJ in continuation of his 80th birthday said Bamaiyi was only invited to answer allegation on killings that occurred under his watch.
According to him, when allegations about killings under Bamaiyi came, security agencies asked him to defend himself saying the former army chief was never in danger of being killed.
He said, “That I wanted to kill him? What of the people he killed? My government did not plot to kill him. My government asked him to answer to those that were alleged to have been killed by him and that is legitimate.
“That if there is an allegation that you have done something, that you have committed a crime, then you are arrested, you should answer. And that’s all. Pure and simple. Who the hell is he that I would want to kill him? Kill him for what? To achieve what? No! There were allegations, the police and the law enforcement agencies decided to look into the allegations.
“They invited him and they asked him to answer as a result of what was found, so they charged him to court. So, it’s now up to him, the investigators as I said, the prosecutors and the judiciary. That’s all.”
On how to make the Economic and financial crimes commission, EFCC, more effective Obasanjo said lawyers prosecuting EFCC cases should be working full time with the agency so as to be part of investigation into corruption cases.
He also called on judges to do their job in adjudicating on corruption cases.
