Masquerade: Hoodlums Unleash Mayhem On Ibadan Residents

Suspected hoodlums on Tuesday unleashed mayhem on the people leaving them brutally injured, while several others lost valuables worth thousands of naira by miscreants following Oloolu Masquerades in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Residents said the men were unfortunate in the early hours of the day, as they were attacked and seriously injured by hoodlums at Asunle Junction of Aremo Area of Ibadan.

The hoodlums mostly young boys, took to the streets of Aremo unleashed terror on anyone on sight, either on bike or inside commercial cabs and tricycles.

The hoodlums who were with various dangerous weapons, appeared in hundreds from the Labiran axis, were seen shouting and running here and there causing pandemonium in the area.

They attacked a man that was going to his working place.

One of the victims simply identify as Olorunfemi said, “I am Olorunfemi , I was just going to my office at Amuloko, I was at the back of this commercial bike and when we got to this Asunle junction we just saw those boys shouting Oloolu is coming and before my bike man could do anything they have descended on us they stole my tablet Android phone and in the process of dragging the phone with them I was stabbed with broken bottles and knife and this resulted in this series of injuries I sustained and despite that I still lost my phone and wallet to them”.

Another victim of the hoodlum attack who could speak with our correspondent sustained fatal injury on his head as he was attacked with machete from one of the hoodlums who stole his phone, the cut was so deep that he was rushed to an undisclosed nearby hospital.

One of the women who were robbed inside the commercial tricycles, simply identified as Ajoke said, “I was going to the market to buy some goods, I didn’t know that Oloolu is out, I would have stayed in my house to avoid this. I was robbed of my phones and all the money that is on me has gone.

‘They forcefully asked all of us inside the Keke Napep to surrender all our belongings, including our jewelleries, and even they collected all the money on the driver.

“There is nothing we could do as  they were armed with various harmful weapons such as broken bottles, jack knives, some of them were  with cutlass”, Ajoke said.

Also, Daily Independent Correspondent in the state, Kazeem Oyeniyi who was hit by one of the hoodlums narrowly escaped further attacks.

An eye witness, Mr. Afeez Lawal who reside in the area said, “those boys are like advance team to the Oloolu Masquerade, they will be in far front to create tension for the people that the Masquerade is approaching and because Oloolu Masquerade don’t see women and it is also a taboo for a women to see it, in that wise those hoodlums usually take the advantage while scaring people they go for their valuables, at times they rob people and even shops.’’
