Maritime Workers Applauds NPA MD Over Uncommon Feat
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), has applauded the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), for paying the arrears of tally clerk and onboard security men.
Recall that the MWUN and NPA had been at logger over disengagement of tally Clark and onboard security men and owing of eight months wages arrears. But, speaking in Lagos at the 4th Quadrennial Branch Delegates Electio held in Lagos, the President-General of MWUN, Com. Adewale Adeyanju commended the MD for accomplishing a feat her predecessor couldn’t achieve.
He said “I commended the MD because when she can in, she was able to pay the arrears of tally clerks and onboard security men. We have not met her but we are looking forward to meeting her so that we tell her the problems that are about to happened.”
“We acknowledge her doggedness and applauded the MD for directing the prompt payment of arrears owed Tally clerks and onboard security men within three months of her ascension to office. This was a feat her predecessors were unable to accomplish.”
Adeyanju also assure the MD and other stakeholders in the sector of industrial harmony at the seaports. “The MD should be rest assured that there won’t be violence nor picketing at the port that is my assurance to everyone including the stakeholders provided what belong to MWUN members and NPA workers are given to them. We won’t be violent, our door door are opened for dialogue I know she is a good mother that will listen to her children.”
Speaking earlier, the immediate past President of MWUN, NPA branch, Com. Adeleke Sanni said during his rein as President, he was able to reinstate 13 officers erroneously disengaged during Port concessioning. He also stated that there were upward review of conditions of service and financial guide.
“During my period as president, with our senior colleagues, we ensured that 13 officers and staff that management erroneously disengaged during ports concessioning were reinstated.” Sanni however boasted that during his time no staff was laid off.
“Throughout our time, no single staff was laid off also when we noticed that the level of manpower in NPA was unreasonably declining due to retirement by age or length of service, we engaged the management and that ensured that recruitment exercise was carried out though not at the proportion we had wanted.”
He however charged workers at the authority to take their job seriously. “My earnest advice to NPA staff is that we must take out job seriously knowing that without your job there will be no Union. “We should change our attitude to work because it is when there is high productivity then we can have the moral right to ask for upward review of our conditions of service.”
