Man Bags Life Imprisonment For Rape
A High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti yesterday sentenced a 35-year-old
man, Tope Odeyemi, to life imprisonment having been found guilty of
rape.

Odeyemi, according to the state Attorney General ,Mr Owoseni Ajayi who
led the prosecution told the court that the accused committed the
offence on 4th September, 2014 in Iyin-Ekiti, in Irepodun/Ifelodun
local government area of the state.

Ajayi said the father of two, on the said date, sexually assaulted a
27-year-old woman and inflicted grievous bodily harm her which led to
her admission in a hospital.

The offence, the commissioner of justice said, contravened Section 358
of the Criminal Code, Laws Cap C 16, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

No fewer than five witnesses were called by the prosecution to prove
his case against two called by the defence counsel, Mr Taiwo Adeloye .

Adeloye who described all the evidence brought against his client as
feeble and porous urged the court to discountenance them.

The convict who claimed that the victim was his girlfriend, said she
lied against him because he refused to buy her a BlackBerry phone.

The state counsel also urged the court to convict Odeyemi based on the
evidence laid before the court.

In his judgement, Justice Adekanye Ogunmoye  in his judgement said
based on the confessional statement made by the accused and the other
corroborative evidence of the prosecution reinforced the conviction,
found him guilty as charged.
The judge who noted  that the act of rape and defilement was becoming
rampant in the state said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to
other potential rapists.
