Lionel Richie Hints At “We Are The World“ Remake In Light Of Coronavirus Pandemic
American singer and songwriter Lionel Brockman Richie Jr commonly known as Lionel Richie has revealed that there might be a remake of the classical song “We Are The World.”
The remake is to help raise money in light of the chaos from the novel coronavirus (Covid-19).
He made this known in a recent interview with People Magazine.
However, in light of the current Covid-19 outbreak worldwide, the message of the song is clearly relatable at this trying time.
Richie said:“Two weeks ago we said we didn’t want to do too much about the song because this not the time to sell anniversary. But the message is clear”.
He added that although he has attempted to write fresh lyrics of the song, he still finds himself drawn to the lyrics of the original wordings. He said:
“Every time I try and write another message, I write those same words “.
The 70-year-old music icon further recalled how one of the song’s prominent chorus lines “There’s a choice we’re making, we’re saving our own lives “ came to life during a discussion with late Michael Jackson. He said:
“That line came to life as Michael and I were sitting there talking. We said, you can either say, I’m saving my life or we‘re saving our lives.’ we are the world’ is a statement we wanted to make, what do we do to save our own?”
The soulful song was released in 1985 and was written by Richie and the late pop legend Micheal Jackson as a charity fit to help join in the fight against famine in Africa.
The song features Richie, the late Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Late Kenny Roger, Michael Bolton, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna and a host of other entertainment headliners at the time. Together they used their voices to reflect humane feelings towards the needy. The song raised a total of $63 million in sales to help the famine-affected areas in Africa.
In relation to the present world health threats of Covid-19, Richie added that the message of the song still remains important now. He noted that “ we are back to ‘those people’ and if you find yourself saying ‘those people’ then you are not thinking properly, what happened in China, and in Europe, it came here. So if we don’t save our brothers there it’s going to come home to all of us. All of us are in this together “.
No release date or collaborations for the remake of the song has been revealed.
Many other celebrities have also joined in lending a voice and funds in dealing with the pandemic Covid-19.
