A nutritionist, Latifat Calfox, on Tuesday in Lagos advised people to incorporate lime or lemon in their diet, saying the fruits are potent detoxifiers and good for human health.
Calfox gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
She said lime and lemon contain outstanding phytochemicals that are high in antioxidants and anti-cancer properties.
She said: “Lemon and lime have antibiotic substance, which is protective against bacterial poisoning and toxins in the body.
“The fibre in lemon and lime scrubs the intestines and supports colon function, which is one of the body’s most important detox organs.
“However, lemon has slightly more health benefits because it has higher Vitamin C content, which helps the liver to produce glutathione, a regenerative antioxidant that helps the liver to process and eliminate toxins.’’
Calfox explained that both have acidic taste, but when consumed, they produce alkaline effect in the stomach.
“Both are great choice for people who are looking for true detoxification,” she added.
She advised that the lemon or lime be chopped and soaked in water for 24 hours and be taken every morning at least 30 minutes before breakfast for effective result.
“The limonene from the peel also has anti-cancer effects and increases the levels of liver enzymes involved in detoxifying and eliminating carcinogens,” she said.
Calfox noted that while lime and lemon naturally help in cleansing the human body, water played an essential role in carrying out waste and toxins.
She, however, advised people to always seek professional support when planning a detox programme.
