Lawmaker Stresses Importance Of Technical Education

A member of the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Mr Samuel Ufuo (PDP-Mbo), says investment in technical education is a sure way to solve unemployment problems in the state.

Ufuo, the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, said this in an interview in Uyo on Sunday.

He said that technical education would impact some skills in the youth which would enable them to become self-reliant.

The lawmaker said the youths needed technical know-how that would sustain them in life because the era of waiting for nonexistent white collar jobs was over.

“When you train people in some technical areas and they have skills, they can use them to develop themselves. This will help them to be self-reliant.

“So I really want the State Government to concentrate on how to resuscitate technical education. Government should build more technical colleges in the state and equip them properly because the seven in existence are not enough, ” Ufuo said.

He recalled that the state assembly had passed a resolution, urging the state government to build at least one technical college in each of the 10 federal constituencies.

He said, “Based on the resolution that we passed recently, at least each federal constituency should have a technical college while we continue to develop more.”
