Osun State Government and members of Osogbo Grammar School Old Students Association have disagreed over alleged conversion of a portions of land that belongs to the school for other purposes other than education.
Members of the Alumni of the school alleged that the state government has started allocating a portion of the land of the institution to private individuals for use for purposes other than education.
The spokesperson of the alumni association, Pa Joseph Aderemi Akinlade, while speaking with newsmen in Osogbo, noted that the move negated the principles of the development of the school, since the purposes for which the lands were being converted were not related to education and the progress of the school.
Akinlade quoted the concerned members of the school as lamenting that government’s decision to convert the lands for other purposes was with impunity and antithetical to the association’s contributions to the infrastructural development of the school.
But the Commissioner for Lands and Physical planing for the state, Mr. Akintunde Akinade, said government is only trying to put to other uses, the left over lands belonging to the school instead of leaving them lying waste over the years.
Akinlade added that government’s decision to use the land was in tandem with the change of land use project which could be public or commercial-oriented.
He disclosed that the project was not peculiar to Osun State, adding that other states such as Lagos and Oyo had put such left over lands to public use for the purpose of development.
