Lagos Chief docked over alleged trespass, use of weapons

A Lagos chief, Shafar Shanu, and his brother, Mutiu Shanu, were on Thursday docked before an Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos over alleged use of dangerous weapons to scare inhabitants of a community.
Shafar, 75, resides at 27, Ijebo-Ode Road, Eredo, Epe, Lagos, while Mutiu, 40, resides at 3, Dele Afolabi Avenue, Isawo, Ikorodu, Lagos.
They pleaded not guilty to a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, trespass and breach of the peace.
The Prosecutor, Eshiet Eshiet, told the court that the accused and two others already in court committed the offences on August 15 at 10am at Eredo area of Epe, Lagos State.
Eshiet said that two other accused had earlier been brought to court sometime in October before Shafar and Mutiu were arrested.
He said that the accused forcefully entered into Eredo community and caused breach of the peace.
Eshiet said: “The accused were armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons, parading themselves as thugs, who made the inhabitants to flee their homes.”
The prosecutor said the accused also resisted arrest by obstructing one Olatunde Olaide from discharging her lawful duty.
Eshiet said that the offences contravened Sections 52, 117, 166, and 410 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The Magistrate, B. A. Sonuga, granted them N500,000 bail each, with two sureties each in like sum.
He said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and one of them must be a community leader with evidence of tax payment.
Sonuga adjourned the case till December 8 for mention.
