Lagos Arraigns 5 Students For Sexual Assault
The Lagos State Government yesterday arraigned five students (names withheld) of Ireti Grammar School, Falomo before a state Magistrates’ Court sitting in Igbosere for alleged sexual assault.
The boys, two of whom are 17 and three 16 years old, were arraigned before Magistrate Patrick Adekomaya, and were accused by the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) of committing the alleged offence May 4, 2017 at Norman Williams Street, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Due to the ages of the defendants the arraignment was closed to the public, but a representative of the Office of the Public Defender held watching brief for the complainants.
The defendants are standing trial on a four-count charge of alleged conspiracy, unlawful assembly, gross indecency by forcing themselves on a female pupil and unlawfully and willfully damaging her school skirt valued at N1,150.
According to Prosecuting Counsel, Mr Olaitan Soetan, the offences contravened and were punishable under Section 35, 44(1) &(4), 134 and 412 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendants all pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Magistrate Adekomaya granted them N500,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum, who must also be civil servants.
Adekomaya further ordered that the case file be forwarded to the DPP’s office for advice and adjourned till June 14.
