Edo Council Chairman, 13 Others Kidnapped

 

The Chairman of Esan Central Local Government in Edo State, Waziri Edokpa, was Friday kidnapped along with 13 passengers of a popular Benin-based transport company while travelling on the Benin-Abuja highway.

Edokpa, a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, was abducted in the early hours of yesterday at a location between Ekpoma and Benin City.

It was further gathered the commercial bus was traveling to Abuja from Benin City when the passengers were kidnapped, while the kidnappers reportedly killed the driver.

The whereabouts of all the victims remained unknown, as the kidnappers were yet to make contact with victims’ relations.

It was gathered that chairmen of councils that make up Edo south senatorial district held a closed-door meeting with the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, on how to address the security challenges in the area.

When contacted, the state Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, neither responded to the calls nor text messages sent to his phone line.
