Kano Proposes 49.11 Per cent Allocation On Education To Upscale Near Collapse
Kano state government has restated determination to revive the near collapse of educational system with a proposed 49.11 per cent in 2024 appropriation.
Besides, the government disclosed plan to reopen all technical and vocational schools already shut down by the immediate past administration to further strength the dwindling skills among younger generation.
The state Commissioner for education, Hon. Umar Doguwa gave the assurance on Friday at the opening of activities slated to market 63rd Nigeria Independence anniversary in Kano.
Doguwa who regretted that the NNPP administration inherited the highest number of out of school children in Northern Nigeria because of the infected corrupt practice the sector was left with.
Worsen still, the Commissioner worried that of the total number of 5.2 million pupils in public primary schools in Kano, 4.5 million are sitting on bear floor due to the failure of previous administration to private future.
The Commissioner who faulted the feeding program promoted by the immediately government, revealed that 30 out of 67 public boarding schools in Kano were left closed on no just reason. He alleged that rather than ensuring quality feeding system of the few boarders, the government approved a daily feeding while food stuff were being siphoned.
” When this government came on board, we met near collapse system. As commissioner of education, I have so far visited more than. 100 public schools and what I see was not palatable for any system. Dilapidated structures, absence of furniture, poor sanitary system with hundred of students sharing a toilet.
” Kano now has the highest number of out-of-school children. We have massive irregularities where public schools are being sold to individuals, delayed salaries, indiscipline among teachers and principals. We have seen how Executive secretary sold food items meant for boarders and, head of schools collecting loan that will be paid by teachers. It is worst”.
In an effort to rescue the ugly situation the Commissioner explained that more allocation will be deployed on education in 2024 appropriation, above the United Nations 25 per cent recommended allocation on education.
According to Doguwa, plan has been concluded to ensure massive enrollment and recruitment of qualified teachers to reduce out-of-school children in the state.
