How Nigeria Varsities Can Achieve Basic Objectives –  Don

The Dean, Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, Professor Iyiola Jegede has said that there is urgent need for Nigerian universities to collaborate with other International higher institutions to fulfill its objectives.

He stated this when Pro Vice Chancellor, Aberystwyth University, Professor John Grattan visited the University of Lagos.

In his welcome address, Professor Jegede said that the reason for collaboration with the United Kingdom University is to fulfill basic objectives.

According to him, “We have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will assist the university, especially in the area of research.”

Responding, Professor Grattan from the UK University emphasised that there are a lot potentials here that they need to harness.

“Our University is working assiduously in the area of research because excellent teaching cannot be separated from research.  African students find it difficult to study in the UK because the government places stringent rules on visa. This prompted us to collaborate with UNILAG”, he said.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ramon Bello, said that the 21st century is about research, saying there is need to take research seriously in order to leave the 62nd position in Africa to the top 10.

The VC, who was represented by his vice, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, stressed that any university that is not looking at research will be in trouble in the current dispensation.
