How N700,000 Gift To Girlfriend Exposed Messenger Who Stole $12,000
An office assistance, Ifeanyi Anyanwu, who allegedly absconded to Calabar after stealing his employer’s $12,000, and gave his girlfriend N700,000, was Wednesday arraigned before a Lagos magistrate’s court sitting at Igbosere.
Anyanwu, aged 28, who was working at a financial services company, is standing trial on a count charge of theft.
The defendant, who pleaded guilty to the offence, was remanded in prison custody till October 31, for facts and sentence.
The prosecutor, Friday Mameh, told the court during arraignment that the defendant committed the alleged offence while he was working with the complainant, Mr. Olalekan Salami, a financial analyst.
He said the incident occurred on Furo Ezimora Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, in Eti-Osa Local Government Area. Mameh said the defendant stole $12,000, equivalent to N4.5 million, belonging to the complainant, saying “the defendant was arrested through the help of his girlfriend in Calabar, who had gone to withdraw the N700,000, that she deposited in her bank account.
“The defendant’s girlfriend, after her arrest, told the Police how she came about the money, and then took the Police to the defendant’s residence in Calabar, where he was apprehended and brought to Lagos.”
According to the prosecutor, the offence is punishable under Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
