‘Edo Won’t Cede Any Land To Herdsmen’
The Edo State Government yesterday, restated that it will not cede any part of its land for grazing of cattle in the state.
In a statement issued in Benin City, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie, said its position on the issue was clear and had not changed since it insisted that it would not cede land to herdsmen.
“Our attention has been drawn to misleading and false media reports claiming that Governor Godwin Obaseki, has agreed to provide grazing land for herders in the state.
“Our position on grazing land is clear and has not shifted, which is that there is no free land for grazing in Edo State. Grazing is an economic activity just like poultry and piggery or any other agricultural enterprise. The Edo State Government will not cede any land for grazing.
“Governor Obaseki has continually warned against politicising security issues in the state,” the statement reads. Ogie noted that some politicians were trying to instigate the type of killings witnessed in some states of the country, because they were angry at their loss in the political space.
“But their plans have failed because of the pre-emptive measures taken by Governor Obaseki and security agencies. We condemn the current efforts by the defeated politicians to cause mayhem and chaos in the state.”
BESIDES, the state government has partnered the Concerned Edo Citizens (CEC) to increase awareness on safety protocols to contain spread of the second wave of COVID-19 in markets, event centres and other public places in Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha and Egor councils.
The group, which commenced the campaign in Oredo Council, visited Lagos Street, Ibiwe, Igun Street, Sakponba Road, Airport Road, Sapele Road and parts of Government Reserved Area (GRA), Ugbor and Ugbor-Amagba.
It also visited the Oba Market, Yanga, Oliha, Uwa, Ekiosa, Oka and Idogbo markets, as well as Siluko Road, Textile-Mill Road, Ogida Barracks, TV Road and Second West-Circular Road, among others.
Convener of the group, Ogbewi Aghedo, said the campaign was important due the high fatality rate being recorded in the second wave of COVID-19.
