GOtv Boxing: Baby Face Thanks Sponsors For N2m Cash Prize
Rilwan “Baby Face” Babatunde, winner of the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy and cash prize for the best boxer at GOtv Boxing Night 11, has commended the sponsors for making his dream come true.
Baby Face was voted by journalists as the best boxer at the event, which held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan, on Sunday. The event, sponsored by GOtv and supported by MultiChoice and the Federal Inland Revenue Service delivered fun aplenty for Ibadan fans.
Baby Face’s ferocious punches, delivered at stunning speed, put a quick end to the light welterweight challenge bout with Waliu “Oganla” Arogundade in the fourth of the scheduled eight-round duel. The young boxer described himself as a product of GOtv Boxing, having been selected after an impressive audition at GOtv Boxing NextGen Search 1 in Lagos.
“I have to thank the sponsors and organisers of GOtv Boxing Night. They have encouraged me to make something of my life by providing the platform to do what I do best. Winning N2million naira while fighting in Nigeria is not something that had happened before. I pray that God should continue to bless GOtv,” said the 21-year old.
GOtv Boxing Night 11, which featured seven fights, yielded an unprecedented number of knockouts, as all the fights ended within the distance. In the headline bout, Nigeria’s Oto “Joe Boy” Joseph defended his West African Boxing Union lightweight title by defeating, in dismissive fashion, Ghana’s Ayitey Mettle within 58 seconds of the first round. National light welterweight champion, Olaide “Fijaborn” Fijabi, took three rounds to extinguish whatever ambition of upset Vincent Essien harboured. In the heavyweight division, Kabiru “KB Godson” Towolawi knocked out Adewale “Masevex” Masebinu in the third round.
National light middleweight champion, Sule “Tyson” Olagbade stopped Wahab “Hammer” Adebisi in the seventh round, while Akeem “Dodo” Sadiku accounted for Kazeem “KC Confidence” Saka via a second-round knockout. The first fight on the night laid the foundation. It saw Sadiq “Happy Boy” Adeleke go home happy after knocking out Taiwo “Twin Terror” Kareem.
