Fedpoly Ado Ekiti Shut, As Students Protest Death Of Colleague
The Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, was on Sunday, shut indefinitely as students of the institution threatened to burn down the institution’s health centre in protest over alleged death of one of their colleagues.
Our correspondent learnt that trouble started on Sunday morning, when news filtered in that one of the two students of the institution who reportedly complained of malaria fever and rushed to the polytechnic Health Centre for treatment on Friday died in the early hours of Saturday.
A source close to the institution, told our correspondent that the students, on learning that one of their colleagues had died, quickly mobilized and marched to the Health Centre, and burnt it down.
Aside from several other properties that were destroyed , they also barricaded all roads leading to and from the institution, thereby halting free flow of traffic for several hours.
One of the students, who craved anonymity, accused the management of the polytechnic of not taking their welfare and wellbeing seriously.
He alleged that each time any of them fell sick, the only drug available at the health centre was Paracetamol.
According to him, “the same negative attitude repeated itself when the two students were taken to the centre; rather than treating them with effective malaria drugs or injection, the only drug offered them was Paracetamol.”
Though the polytechnic authorities did not confirm whether any student actually died, the Registrar of the institution, Mrs. Sade Adediran, in a statement, announced the immediate and indefinite closure of the school.
The statement warned that any student found on campus after the closure would be apprehended and made to face the consequences.
