Man Lynched In Ekiti For Allegedly Consuming Human Faeces
Irate mob on Monday lynched a yet to be identified man in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital.
People had reported that the suspect was led round some streets of the city naked including, Okeyinmi, Matthew Street, Ijigbo and others, before taking him to Odo Ado, where he was killed.
Sources at the scene where the man, suspected to be a ritualist was lynched, claimed that he was killed while trying to escape from the mob who accused him of allegedly consuming the faeces.
When journalists visited the scene of the incident, the dead body of the victim which had been partly burnt was lying dead on the street, at Red Roof Junction, Igirigiri area of Odo-Ado.
There were conflicting reports as to where the suspect was sighted collecting the faeces.
Sources claimed that the man was sighted by an unidentified elderly woman, who raised the alarm which prompted youths of the area to apprehend him at Matthew area of the town which others said it happened in Agric Ilope area.
People at the area claimed that the man had earlier been paraded in parts of the state capital,
They said he was taken to palace of the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe, where the incident was reported
The suspected, according to sources, after been stripped naked and beaten by the mob claimed that he knew some clergymen in the town.
He led the people to a spiritual church at the Odo Ado Area, but when they couldn’t get the clergyman at home, the suspect allegedly took to his heels but he was pursued by the mob who caught up with him at the Red Roof Junction.
The roof of the church was immediately destroyed with the adjoining room the neighbours described as, “the church office.”
None of the witnesses at the neighbourhood could identify the victim, with all of them directing newsmen to Matthew Street, saying “that is where the whole thing started.”
All the people who spoke to newsmen could not give any reason for the killing but they said,’’ he was gathering faeces into a bag at Matthew area, and they said it was an elderly woman that spotted him and raised the alarm.”
They also claimed that the man was lynched on the suspicion that he was a ritualist.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State police command, Mr. Caleb Ikechukwu, could not be reached for his comments on the incident as his telephone was switched off.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Odo Ado said he was not in the office and had not been briefed on the incident, saying “we are currently busy where the Vice President is having an event.”
