Estevao Ready For Bigger Chelsea Role, Says Alonso

 

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has backed Brazilian youngster Estevao Willian to play an important role for the club throughout the season, praising the teenager’s attitude and mentality ahead of their Carabao Cup clash with Leeds United.

The 19-year-old has had to remain patient during the opening weeks of the campaign, having yet to start a Premier League match.

However, Estevao impressed when given a starting opportunity in Chelsea’s previous Carabao Cup fixture against Luton Town and has also made notable contributions as a substitute.

His latest cameo came in Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, when he came close to securing an equaliser late in the game, forcing goalkeeper David Raya into an excellent reaction save.

In a post obtained from Chelsea’s website on Wednesday, Alonso said Estevao was ready to take on a bigger role and praised his commitment in training.

“Este is ready and is training well,” Alonso said. “The other day against Arsenal he had a very good impact and he had a great chance. He is fully involved and has a good attitude every day.”

The Spanish coach said he had complete confidence in the youngster, while acknowledging that he was still adapting to English football.

“I count on Este 100 per cent, because of his potential and the fact that he’s so young, he is in that process of adapting and learning quickly,” Alonso said.

He added that Estevao’s hunger and desire to prove himself would be important qualities for Chelsea throughout the campaign.

“The season is going to be long, and players that have the desire and hunger to prove and show every day they are up for the challenge is what we want – and what we want to create here in the building,” he said.

“Este is part of it. He has a very good attitude and mentality to prepare for every game and be ready for the team.”
