Drug Abuse; Customs Intercepts Containers Load Of Tramadol In Lagos Port
There are strong indications that the Tincan Island Command of Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted containers load of tramadol tablet allegedly smuggled from Indian.
The seizure is coming against the backdrop of widespread condemnation against drug abuse and ban of codeine syrup by the Federal Government.
It was gathered that the containers were intercepted by officers of the command after there were attempt to smuggle it out of the seaport.
Even though the actual quantity and value were yet to be ascertained as at press time, the drugs were said to being counted as at the time of filing this report.
A Customs officer who craved anonymity said the seizure is a result of customs efforts being put in place to prevent smuggling and evasion of duty in the seaports.
Recall that Tramadol is an opioid analgesic. It is prescribed to treat moderate to moderately severe pain and is considered a safer alternative to other narcotic analgesics like hydrocodone, and methadone.
Tramadol, used to treat moderate pain, is among controlled drugs suspected to being abused by some youths across the country causing unhealthy addiction and adverse side effects.
It is believed to be fast selling and being shipped into the country through channels suspected to be unlawful.
The Command Public Relations Officer, Uche Ejesieme, who confirmed the seizure, told our correspondent that the service is yet to ascertain the quantity and value and that the customs will make its findings public soon.
He was silent about the particulars of the container and possibility of arrest of any suspect in connection with the seizure as , according to him, ”We are still investigating and counting and by evening we should be able to make the full report.
