Court Jails Grandma, Daughter For Throwing Away New Born Baby

A 36-year old grandmother identified as Bosede Oyetunde, has been sentenced to one month imprisonment by an Akure Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly throwing away a day-old baby boy in the bush.
The grandmother and her daughter, Opeyemi Isaac, 20, were sentenced by Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.A Edwin to one month imprisonment each over their roles in the crime.
The convicts allegedly committed the offence at about 8:00pm at Omotoso Ore road Ondo State in the Akure Magisterial District on July 4, 2017.
The police prosecutor, DSP Ojumu Olayemi said, the grandmother and her daughter conspired together to commit the felony to murder and did unlawfully attempt to kill a day old baby boy by wrapping the child in a nylon bag and throwing him into the bush.

According to the prosecution, the offence committed is contravened sections 516, and 320(2) of the criminal Code Cap 37, Vol1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

While the charge sheet was read to them ,the accused persons pleaded guilty to the two-count charges.
While narrating how they were arrested, the Ojumu said the accused persons were arrested by police division Igbotako, and investigation was carried out which later led to their arrest after a tip off.
The grandmother? who did not deny her action said fear of how to take care of the baby prompted her action.
In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Mrs O.A Edwin sentenced the accused (Oyetunde) to one month imprisonment.

She also ordered her to render two months community service in  Igbotako police station.
Edwin ordered the second accused person, who was the mother of the baby, to go for mental assessment because the court observed she was not mentally stable.
She thereafter ordered the mother to be breastfeeding the baby in the Ondo State children’s home.
