Court Remands Suspected Trailer Hijacker
A Sagamu Chief Magistrate’s Court, Ogun State, Thursday, ordered that a suspected truck hijacker, Mohammed Sanni, be remanded in prison custody, pending an advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), on charges of armed robery made against him by the police.
The court presided over by Chief Magistrate O. F. Adedutan (Mrs.) gave the order while granting an Exparte motion for the remand of the 38 years old suspect, by Barrister Morufu Animashaun, of Force Criminal Investigation Department (Force CIID) Alagbon Ikoyi, Lagos.
In urging the court to remand the suspect, Barrister Animashaun, while arguing the motion exparte marked MSH/21m/2019, told the court that the suspect and others now at large, on January 23, 2019, at Ogere, on Lagos-Ibadan expressway, while armed with dangerous weapons, which includes Knives, cutlasses, hijacked a truck marked LKJ 645 Ye, loaded with 480 bags of cocoa beans, from one Ignatius Christian and diverted the truck.
Animashaun told the court that after the incident, a petition was written to the Commissioner in-Charge of General Investigation Force CIID, Alagbon, one Ejor A. Bisong, of 52, Obudu Road, Four Corner, Ikom, Cross-River State and upon investigating the petition, the department’s operatives swung into action and arrested the suspect.
He told the court that the motion was brought pursuant to section 36(7) of the
Nigeria 1999 Constitution As amended, Section 306 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Ogun State, 2017, and Under Inherent Jurisdiction of the Honourable Court.
Upon hearing the submission of the police lawyer, Chief Magistrate Adedutan, ordered that the suspect be remanded in prison custody, pending an advice from the Ogun State’s Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), while adjourned the matter till May 3.
The charge against the suspect reads,
Count one: “that you Mohammad Sanni (M) and others (Now at large) sometimes in the month of January 2019, at Ogere, in Sagamu Magisterial District, Ogun State, conspired to commit a felony to wit Armed Robbery, relating to forceful diversion of Four Hundred and Eighty (480) bags of Cocoa property of one Ejor Achu Bisong of two Smiles Ventures and thereby committed on offence contrary to Section 6 (b) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act. LFN. 2004.
Count 2: “that you Mohammad Sanni (M) and others (Now at Iarge) on a about me 18th day of January. 2019, around 11 pm at Ogere, in Sagamu, in the Sagamu Magisterial District, Ogun State, whilst armed with offensive weapons to wit: knife forcefully collected Waybill from one Ignatius Christian and diverted truck with Registration No. LKJ 645 YE and forcefully stole Four Hundred and eighty bags of Cocoa thereby committed on offence contrary to Section 1(2) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act. LFN. 2004”.
