Court Remands 4 Businessmen For Allegedly Producing Adulterated Engine Oil
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday, ordered that four men, charged with alleged production of substandard engine oil, be remanded in prison custody.
Justice Oluremi Oguntoyibo, ordered that Uche Johnson, Olaide Shittu, Kingsley Meteke and Abdulquadri Olayinka be remanded, pending ruling in their bail application on March 19.
Oguntoyibo, also fixed May, 2, 7 and 9 for substantive trial.
The Federal Government charge the defendants with four counts of production, possession, dealing on and distribution of substandard products.
They all pleaded not guilty to the charges.
After their arraignment, the prosecutor, Mr J. A Olofindare, urged the court for date for trial and for the prosecution to produce its witnesses and establish its case against the defendants.
On his part, defence counsel Mr S. U Nweze, informed the court of a bail application filed on behalf of the defendants, urging the court to grant them bails on liberal terms.
In the charge, the defendants were alleged to have indulged in production for public consumption, engine oil which did not meet mandatory industrial standards.
They were said to have adulterated 128 drums and 9.45 litres of engine oil.
The products were said to have failed to comply with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria’s (SON) Conformity Assessment Programme. According to the prosecution, the offence contravened the provisions of sections 1(8) and 1(8)(II) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, 2004.
