Confusion In Ondo As Armed Robbers Attack Bullion Van
There was confusion in Ondo Wednesday, as dare devil armed robbers attacked a bullion van at Ireje Village on Akure – Ondo in Ondo East Local Government Area of Ondo State, leaving policemen that escorted the van with bullet wounds.
It was learnt that the bullion van, belonging to a new generation bank loaded with an undisclosed sum of money, was said to have been attacked by the robbers, numbering 10.
It was further gathered that the robbers, who were inside two vehicles, reportedly opened fire at the bullion van at about 1pm.
It was also gathered that the operation was not successful as the robbers were unable to break into the bullion van to take the money away.
But some policemen escorting the billion van and the bank officials were injured during the exchange of gunfire between the robbers and the policemen.
An eye witness said the bullion van was on its way to Ondo town from Akure, the state capital when the incident happened.
According to her, “It happened at about 1pm, we just heard sporadic gunshots and everybody began to run for safety.”
She further disclosed that after the operation, the robbers ran into the bush while some policemen who were injured also ran into the bush.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident when contacted  said that the robbers were unable to carry the money inside the bullion van away.
While confirming that some of the policemen attached to the bullion van were injured, the PPRO however disclosed that no policeman was killed in the attack.
Joseph said ,” Our men engaged the robbers in gun duel and were able to over-power the robbers, who escaped with bullet injuries and we are already on their trail”.
