Commissioner, UNICEF challenge parents to stop violence against children

The Plateau State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Rufina Gurumyen, has challenged parents and guardians to take action on ending violence against children in the country.
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Deputy Director Child in the Ministry, Joseph Gwaisam, stated this during the closing ceremony of a four days workshop organized by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in Plateau State in conjunction with UNICEF ‘D’ Field, Bauchi.
According to Gurumyen: “It is time to take action to end violence against children in the state and the entire country.
“Enough is enough on child battery, rape, labour and other forms of abuse.”
She said parents needed to know that children had “right to life, health and education”, adding that gone were those days that “children had no voice to voice out their right or view on what they would be”.
Gurumyen commended UNICEF for its support to the ministry, noting that the ministry has been partnering with UNICEF in the area of fighting for the rights of children in the state and the participants to put into practice what they learned in the workshop.
The UNICEF Consultant, ‘D’ Field Bauchi, Clement Onongo, thanked the ministry for organizing the workshop with its support, adding the effort will not be in vain.
Onongo thanked the facilitators whom she said gave their best to the participants.
Onongo disclosed that the training was focused towards child protection system strengthening for stakeholders of child protection in the state.
Responding on behalf of the participants, the Atang Ateng of Ganawuri, Yakubu Chaimang, commended the efforts the organizers of the programme and thanked UNICEF for its support towards ensuring that children were protected.
