CJN Inaugurates New A’Court Justices Wednesday
Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, will, on Wednesday, September 20, administer oath of office on newly appointed justices of the Court of Appeal.
The nine justices are to be inaugurated at the main auditorium of the Supreme Court.
A statement by the Director of Press and Information at the Supreme Court, Dr Festus Akande, Sunday, indicated the CJN will administer the oath by 11:00 am.
The justices are: Hannatu Azumi Laja-Balogun from Kaduna State, who was appointed a High Court judge on May 24, 1999; Binta Fatima Zubairu from Kaduna State, appointed a High Court judge on October 31, 2001; and Peter Chudi Obiora from Anambra State, who was sworn in as High Court judge on January 17, 2005.
Okon Efreti Abang from Akwa Ibom State, who was appointed a High Court judge on June 22, 2009; Asma’u Musa Mainoma from the Federal Capital Territory, appointed High Court judge on February 1, 2013; Lateef Adebayo Ganiyu from Oyo State, who became High Court judge on June 26, 2014; and Jane Esienanwan Iyang from Cross River State, who was sworn in as High Court judge on February 12, 2015.
The rest are: Hadiza Rabiu Shagari from Sokoto State, who was elevated to the High Court Bench on February 12, 2015; and Paul Ahmed Bassi from Borno State, appointed to the High Court on July 14, 2017.
Meanwhile, it was reported at the weekend that barring any last-minute change in plan, the CJN will constitute the Supreme Court panel that will hear appeals arising from the judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Court, latest Wednesday.
The PEPC had, on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, delivered a 12-hour judgment on appeals arising from the February 25, 2023 presidential election, upholding the election of President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.
Presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, respectively, rejected the court’s judgment, vowing to approach the Supreme Court.
They had 14 days from the day of the judgment to file their appeal at the apex court.
The timeline ends Wednesday.
