Buhari Writes Senate, Requests Confirmation Of 27 RECs
President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the Senate, requesting for the screening and subsequent confirmation of 27 Resident Electoral Commissioners.
The letter was read to the Senators, yesterday, by Senate President Bukola Saraki, during plenary.
A letter written by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, dated February 27, 2017 and entitled, “ Confirmation of the Appointments of Resident Electoral Commissioners, REC, ”was received March 21, 2017 by the Office of the President of the Senate.
The letter read, “In compliance with the provisions of Section14(3)(a) of the Third Schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999( as amended), I write to request the confirmation of following nominees for appointment as Resident Electoral Commissioners.
“The Curriculum Vitae of 27 nominees are forwarded herewith for information and consideration of the Senate. It is my hope that Senate will consider and confirm the nominees in the usual expeditious manner.
“Please accept, Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.” In the list, eight present Resident Electoral Commissioners were reappointed and they are Hussaini Pai from the FCT; Alhaji Ahmad Makama, Bauchi; Mike Igini, Delta; Sadiq Musa, Kaduna; Jibrin Zarewa, Kano; Ambassador Rufus Akeju, Lagos; Sam Olumekun, Ondo and Kasim Geidam, Yobe.
In the list, 19 were newly appointed and they are Professor Godswill Obioma, Abia; Ibrahim Abdullahi, Adamawa; James Apam, Benue; Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji, Ebonyi; Dr. Ilona Chuks, Enugu; Dr. Asmau i Maikudi, Katsina; Dr. Mahmuda Isah, Kebbi; Professor Samuel Egwu, Kogi; and others.
Professor Mustapha Zubairu, Niger; Agboke Olaleke, Ogun; Abdul Raji, Oyo; Professor Riskuwa Shehu, Sokoto; Ahmad Bello Mahmud, Zamfara; Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, Plateau; Umar Ibrahim, Taraba; Emeka Joseph, Imo; Obo Effanga, Cross River; Professor Francis Ezeonu, Anambra and Dr. Briyai Frankland, Bayelsa.
Having read the letter, the list will be referred to the Senator Ali Ndume led Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Tuesday next week as it would appear in the day’s Order Paper.
