The meeting between the Senate leadership and members of the National Executive Committee of the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Wednesday ended in stalemate after over three hours.
The Senate had on Tuesday resolved to engage relevant stakeholders to avert the warning strike being planned by ASUU.
However, at the end of the closed door meeting, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institution and Tetfund, Senator Jubril Barau, said the lawmakers had a fruitful deliberation with the ASUU leadership and a way out of the the problem has been found.
According to Barau: “After the deliberation, we set up a sub-committee that would meet with the Minister of Finance and Minister of Budget and National Planing toward resolving the issues.”
In his own contribution, the Acting Chairman of Senate Committee on Labour and Productivity, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, assured that “with the attention of the Minister of Finance and that of Budget and National Planing, by next week Monday, we should have resolved amicably and end the warning strike”.
In his own remarks, the National President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, applauded the Senate for its quick intervention in the matter and promised to cooperate with Senate.
According to Ogunyemi: “We thank the Senate for coming into this matter and we are ready to corporate with them, but as things are, the warning strike continues until we get across to the larger body of the union.”
Those that attended the meeting included the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki; the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka; and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Productivity.
