Beer In Hand, Man Shoots 7 At San Diego Pool Party

Police are trying to find what made a beer-swilling gunman shoot seven people, one fatally, at a California apartment complex pool party.

Peter Selis, 49, a white man, targeted African-American or Hispanic victims during Sunday evening’s rampage, according to witnesses.

A black woman died. Police shot the gunman dead at the upmarket condominium in San Diego.

It is unknown if the incident was a hate crime.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting about 18:00 local time at the La Jolla Crossroads apartments.

One witness told NBC 7 an apartment resident who was celebrating his birthday approached the suspect and invited him to join the celebration. The gunman then reportedly lifted up his shirt, drew his weapon and shot the man in the stomach.

One witness told KFMB-TV that Selis appeared to be drinking a beer during the gunfire.

“He had his beer in one hand and his gun in the other,” the witness told the network.

“There were two victims lying on the ground, one trying to crawl toward the other one to help.”

Another witness said Selis sat in a lawn chair during the incident, and was “telling people to leave”.

It is not yet known if Selis knew any of the roughly 30 people at the party. The shooting victims were four black women, two black men and a Hispanic man.

Three officers shot Selis after he pointed his gun at them.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He is believed to be a resident of the condominium building, where monthly rent ranges between $1,750 and $4,000.

According to US media, Selis filed for bankruptcy in 2015.

He listed his occupation as a car mechanic in court documents, and said he had two children and a stepson.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulcone condemned the “horrific and disturbing act” in a tweet on Monday morning.
