Bailout Funds: Youths Lament Governors’ Failure To Pay Workers’ Salaries, Pensions
The Yoruba Youth Socio-cultural Association (YYSA) on Sunday, frowned at the failure of some state governors, especially in the South West, to pay workers’ salaries and pensions despite bail-out funds received from the federal government. The group, in a statement signed by its president, Olalekan Hammed, commended the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government for its enormous efforts to ensuring socio-economic development, security, a corrupt free society as well as prompt payment of all outstanding salaries.
It recalled that President Buhari made it known in his independence day’s broadcast that federal government released the sum of one trillion naira for state governments to pay all outstanding salaries, allowances and pensions in 2017.
“To our dismay, some South West states like Ekiti, Ondo, Osun and Oyo still owe salaries ranging from three to eight months.
“According to the NLC chairman Ekiti State, Mr Ade Adesanmi in his communication with journalists said that, Ekiti State is owing civil servants eight months’ salary. He stated further that, the Ekiti State government is owing civil servants in ministries four months’ salary, local governments eight months and education institutions like Ekiti State College of Education and others seven months’ salary.
“Osun State government has been paying half salary for almost two years, while Oyo State is owing July, August and September salary.
“Governor Akoredolu of Ondo is yet to clear outstanding salaries, allowances and pensions inherited from the past administration”, adding that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State and his counterpart in Ogun, Ibikunle Amosun are the two respective governors that have been paying salaries as at when due and whose style of governance to some reasonable extent, is in line with the change agenda of President Buhari’s administration.
The association implored the South West governors and other state governors across the country who are still owing salaries, allowances and pensions to fear God and honour president Muhammadu Buhari by paying all outstanding salaries. This is not the first time that Mr. Buhari will lament delay in the payment of salaries, pensions and allowances.
“According to Yoruba proverb, an elderly person that is sweating while talking is definitely crying. They should let Nigerians have positive feelings about President Buhari’s unrelenting efforts,” the youths said.
