Sanwo-Olu Sends New List Of Commissioner-nominees To Lagos Assembly
The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has sent a new list of commissioner-nominees to the House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.
The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, confirmed the receipt of the second list of commissioner-nominees at the plenary session on Monday.
The commissioner-nominees include Prof. Akin Abayomi, Gbenga Omotosho, Sam Egube, Oluwaseun Oriyomi Osiyemi, Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, Engr. Olalere Odusote, Folashade Kaosarat Ambrose-Medem, Akinyemi Bankole Ajigbotafe, Tolani Sule Akibu and Cecilia Dada.
Others in the list include Barakat Akande Bakare, Mosopefoluwa George, Yekini Nurudeen Agbaje, Olumide Oluyinka, Abayomi Samson Oluyomi, Iyabode Oyeyemi Ayoola and Sola Shakirudeen Giwa.
On August 23, the Lagos State House of Assembly confirmed 22 and rejected 17 out of the 39 commissioner-nominees sent by governor Sanwo-Olu for screening.
This action led to criticism from different quarters against the Lagos House of Assembly.
Reacting then, Obasa said it was unfortunate that whenever the house refused to be a ‘rubber stamp’ to a governor’s request, then it would be interpreted by the public that the lawmakers were fighting the governor.
Obasa also said that there was no fight between the lawmakers and the governor.
“There is no basis for the house or myself to fight the governor. The governor is a friend and colleague in serving Lagos state,” he had said.
“We will continue to work together and there is no reason to fight. But we have constitutional rights to say yes or no to his nominees.”
Sanwo-Olu and Obasa, meanwhile recently met with the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, amid the commissioner-nominees confirmation row.
Speaking at the plenary on Monday, Obasa said the former commissioner of health, Akin Abayomi whose nomination was initially rejected made the new list sent by the governor.
The speaker also called on the committee that handled the first list to take responsibility for reviewing the new nominees.
Obasa added that the panel has until Saturday, September 9 to report to the house.
“Some of the nominees have their documents with you, and you can reach out to the new nominees. I want you to be thorough and do the needful while carrying out this exercise,” he said.
