AMLSN Laments Reemergence Of Yellow Fever In Nigeria
The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), has lamented the reemergence of yellow fever in Nigeria.
Addressing newsmen at the end of a special general meeting of AMLSN in Osogbo, Osun State, the National President, Alhaji Toyosi Raheem urged continuous medical surveillance in order to track diseases of public health importance.
He called for serious potential assessment of various vaccines targeted at preventing communicable diseases, adding that Nigerians should be encouraged to produce local vaccines to tackle local viruses.
His words: “It’s worrisome to note the reemergence of Yellow fever in some parts of Nigeria. This further calls for continuous medical surveillance in order to track diseases of public health importance.”
He called on the Federal Government to reconstitute Governing Board of Health Regulatory Bodies to further strengthen the health system in Nigeria.
According to him, since the dissolution of these bodies in 2015, regulatory bodies like MLSCN, PCN, and MDCN have been incapacitated in their activities.
Raheem, who urged government and teaching hospitals to create departments of Medical laboratory Science in the Ministry and Teaching Hospitals in line with the Nigerian National Laboratory Science Policy of 2007. He said that the creation of such departments will promote quality assurance and quality management.
He declared his association’s support for the JOHESU nationwide strike, noting that though a painful decision, AMLSN decided to join the strike action having realized that it is the language the government understands.
The President, who called for the engagement of more Scientists, added that it would not only achieve the expectation under the National Medical Laboratory Science Policy, but also enable the professional body to oversee and coordinate quality management systems and enhance quality laboratory service in Primary Health Centres across the country.
