Akeredolu Raises Alarm Over Massive Influx Of Almajiris To Southwest
Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on Monday raised the alarm over the massive influx of a group of people known as Almajiris into South western part of the country at a time the country is trying to contain the spread of coronavirus pandemic, saying such movement remains a great threat to the region in many respect.
The governor who spoke at Government’s House Ground, Akure during his weekly press briefing on the pandemic said his government has set up an effective and already running system of containment which returns the Almajiris to their states of origin.
Akeredolu said, “This new and embarrassing experience is a matter of serious concern. These particular group of Nigerians is called “Almajiris” in the Northern part of Nigeria. They are mostly destitute and are without a doubt, very vulnerable to the COVID-19 infection.
“Their massive influx into other states, particularly in southwest coinciding with the spread of COVID-19 constitutes a great threat in many respects and calls for concern.”
According to him, ” my message to you at this time is to remain vigilant and be conscious of happenings in your environment. You are enjoined to report cases of such importation of Almajiris to appropriate authorities to help us effectively curtail community transmission of COVID-19 in our state.”
He threatened to set up mobile courts to convict anybody that violates government’s COVID-19 orders and regulations.
Akeredolu said such mobile courts will be fully empowered and supported to achieve the aims and objectives for which they are set up.

The governor who announced the death of a coronavirus patient, also disclosed that the state has discharge six coronavirus patients from the state isolation centres.
