Reopening Of Mogadishu Cantonment Mosque: We Doff Our Hats To Army HQ, Commandant- MURIC
An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has thanked the Nigerian Army Headquarters as well as the commandant of Mogadishu Cantonment for promptly opening the mosque being used for daily prayers after a week long closure.
The appreciation was expressed in a press statement issued on Sunday, 25th October, 2026 by MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.
The statement reads:
”The daily prayers mosque inside Mogadishu Cantonment used by Muslim soldiers and their families who reside in the military blocks has been opened.
”It will be recalled that our organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) made a passionate appeal to the Nigerian Army headquarters as well as the authorities of the Cantonment to reopen the mosque for use by resident Muslim soldiers and members of their families (https://independent.ng/muric-to-army-hq-give-reasons-for-closure-of-mogadishu-cantonment-mosque-in-abuja/).
*”The mosque, which had been closed since Monday 12th October, 2026 was reopened on Tuesday, 20th October, 2026, the same day that MURIC cried out about the closure.*
”News of its reopening on that same day melted our agony the way ice cream liquidifies in the burning desert sun and filled our hearts with joy after a week of excruciating pain. It convinced us that there is hope in our country, Nigeria.
*”This act is symptomatic of high level professionalism in the Nigerian Army, undiluted maturity of its senior officers and their deep respect for the rule of law. We doff our hats to the Nigerian Army.*
”With the exception of a few recalcitrant elements, Nigerians can now beat their chests and say the Nigerian military has fully alligned with democratic ideals.
”We have no doubt that actions like this will promote goodwill among Muslims towards the military. That is what we need to defeat the terrorists and insurgents. We need all hands on deck to eliminate crime or, at least, to reduce it to the barest minimum.
”We therefore appeal to Muslims throughout the country to give full cooperation to military personnel and other security agencies at all times.”
