We Have Resigned From Your Party Since July-Ex-Lagos LG Chair, Aspirant Fault APC Expulsion
Former Agege Local Government Chairman, Ganiyu Egunjobi, and former Agege Constituency II aspirant, Azeez Yusuf, have said they resigned from the All Progressives Congress in July, weeks before the Lagos State chapter of the party announced their expulsion.
The duo stated this in a statement issued on Wednesday in reaction to their expulsion from the APC over alleged anti-party activities and disloyalty.
The Lagos APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, announced their expulsion on Wednesday, saying the party had invoked Article 9(5)(II) of its constitution in taking disciplinary action against the two former members.
Egunjobi and Yusuf had contested the APC primaries for Agege Constituencies I and II respectively, but failed to secure the party’s tickets before obtaining tickets to contest the seats on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement.
However, in their response, the duo said they had already left the APC before the party announced their expulsion.
“For the avoidance of doubt, we resigned from the APC in July 2026 — weeks before the Party announced our purported expulsion on September 23.
“We had already made our decision, communicated our position and moved on politically. We subsequently joined the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), and our resignation and defection were publicly reported by several newspapers.
“The question, therefore, is simple: How can a Party expel people who had already resigned from its membership?
“The latest announcement does not change our political status. We had already left.”
They said their decision to leave the APC followed what they described as the party’s failure to resolve their grievances over its primary elections.
The duo said the APC’s September 23 announcement appeared to be an attempt to alter the circumstances surrounding their departure.
“It is therefore difficult to see the September 23 announcement as anything other than an attempt to rewrite a political history that had already moved on.
“To announce the expulsion of people who had resigned weeks earlier is not a demonstration of political strength. Rather, it raises serious questions about respect for internal democracy, due process and the right of party members to make legitimate political choices.”
The APC had earlier said Egunjobi and Yusuf’s conduct amounted to anti-party activity and disloyalty, maintaining that members who lost internal contests were expected to accept the outcome or pursue available avenues of redress rather than seek another political platform within the same electoral cycle.
The party also said their purported resignations were a “belated and face-saving attempt” to pre-empt disciplinary consequences.
