Firefighters Recover Body Of 52-year-old Man From Well In Kwara
A 52-year-old man, Alaba Ayeni, has been found dead inside a domestic well in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.
The Kwara State Fire Service disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, Hassan Adekunle, saying firefighters recovered Ayeni’s body from the well beside Lamp Bearers Islamic School, off Asa-Dam Road, Ilorin.
According to the statement, the Fire Service received a distress call about the incident and arrived at the scene at about 8:42am, after which its personnel commenced a recovery operation.
The agency said, “Our firefighters commenced a recovery operation and successfully recovered the body of the deceased, identified as Alaba Ayeni, aged 52.”
The Fire Service said the circumstances surrounding how Ayeni ended up inside the well had not been established, but added that children in the neighbourhood discovered him and alerted elders in the area.
“According to information gathered during the operation, children in the community discovered that the man was inside the domestic well and immediately reported the situation to elders in the vicinity,” the statement said.
The agency added that the well was close to the deceased’s residence.
Following the recovery, the deceased’s body was handed over to the police for further action.
“The body was formally handed over to DPO Bolaji of Budo-Nuhu Police Station, Nigeria Police Force, for further necessary action,” the Fire Service said.
Commenting on the incident, the Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, expressed concern over the death and called on residents to take precautions around domestic wells and other open water sources.
Muhammed urged residents to ensure that domestic wells within residential areas were properly secured and covered to prevent accidents.
He also advised parents, guardians and community leaders to ensure that children were not allowed to move around unattended near wells, drainage channels and other potentially hazardous areas.
The Fire Service condoled with the deceased’s family and the community, while reaffirming its commitment to responding promptly to emergencies and protecting lives and property across the state.
