Killings: Osun Won’t Shield Perpetrators, Says Gov’s Aide
The Special Adviser to the Osun State Governor on Security Matters, Samuel Ojo, has declared that the Adeleke administration will not shield anyone found to be involved in the resurgence of violent crimes in the state.
Ojo, who made this known in Osogbo on Wednesday, dismissed allegations that the government was shielding those mentioned as masterminds of Olalekan Oyeyemi’s killing, who was reportedly murdered amid a leadership succession tussle rocking the state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.
Two NURTW leaders identified as Gbedegesin and Kareem Akeem, in a viral video, alleged that Oyeyemi had been designated as the next Osun State NURTW chairman after receiving the governor’s endorsement at a meeting the union leaders held with the state Commissioner for Transportation, Sesan Oyedele, last Sunday.
They insisted that the deceased’s death was caused by some union leaders displeased with the government’s plan to make Oyeyemi the next state chairman of the group.
But the commissioner denied government endorsement of Oyeyemi for the post of Osun NURTW state chairman, saying the union leaders at the said meeting merely briefed him about their decision to make the deceased the new chairman.
However, speaking on government plans to arrest the state’s gradual descent into anarchy following the recent loss of about five lives to crises related to cult attacks and a public transportation union leadership tussle, Ojo said the state government and security agencies would intensify efforts to restore normalcy.
Ojo further stated that an emergency state security meeting was held on Wednesday, adding that no stone would be left unturned to bring perpetrators of violent crimes in the state to book.
“It was as a result of the serial killings that the governor of the state called for an emergency meeting of all the Service Commanders today (Wednesday), and the meeting was anchored by the Deputy Governor, Prince Kola Adewusi.
“All the Service Commanders were present. The Commissioner of Police, the Director of DSS, the Army General, Brigadier General Momo, who just reported, the NDLEA, Immigration, Corrections, Civil Defence and Amotekun bosses were all present. Other senior cabinet members, including the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Jimi Bada, and the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, also attended the meeting.
“The meeting focused on the killings that must be stopped immediately, and the Service Commanders assured the State Governor, who was ably represented by his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, that there won’t be any further loss of life and that the peaceful atmosphere that we have been enjoying in the state before the election will return,” Ojo said.
Asked for his reaction to allegations that the state government was shielding the alleged masterminds of Oyeyemi’s murder, the SA on Security further stated:
“The state government is not shielding anyone. The governor had already said that no one should be spared in the investigation, and that the police and the DSS should investigate the case thoroughly and fish out the killers of those people. The law must take its course against them.
“The Commissioner of Police is working assiduously along with other Service Commanders.”
About five people have been killed between August 24 and September 15 in Ikire, Ile-Ife and Osogbo in circumstances linked to power tussles over motor park control and cult-related feuds.
