LASG Set To Commence Urban Regeneration Of Lagos Island

He said the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources would recontruct thirteen secondary collectors, two drainage outfalls and upgrade some drainage channels while Ministry of Works and Infrastructure would construct the roads saying these projects would go on at the same time.

He stressed that the sign off requires a joint agreement with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure  on the drainage level, the alignments, the collector, outfall, the depth and width of each of the channels  in order for the project to be beneficial to the community.

According to him, the construction of the roads would raise them higher than how they are now and the tertiary drains that will be constructed to discharge into the Collectors and these efforts will end flooding issues on the island” he said.

He mentioned the collectors drains to be recontructed to include Jakara Collector Drain, Oroyinyin Collector Drain, Ojogiwa Collector Drain,  Binuyo Collector Drain, Olusi/ Odunfa Collector Drain, Omidundun Collector Drain, Epe Collector Drain, Thomas Collector Drain,  Sangrose / Mandilas Collector Drain, Odulami Collector Drain, Salvage / Elegbate Collector Drain,  Amuto Collector Drain and Iga Iduganran Collector Drain.

Wahab promised that the contractor would commence work immediately and the projects would be delivered in no time across Lagos Island in order to permanently curb the menace of flooding in the area.

The team also visited  Nnamdi Azikwe Road following a public complaint that certain properties were built on Drainage channels and the Commissioner said these buildings will be marked and served contravention notices and thereafter prosecuted if found guilty.

The team moved to Moshalashi Street where an old pumping station had been converted into a shopping mall, saying the owners of the building will also be invited to check  necessary approvals and documents.

He said the construction /cleaning of canals is going on in various areas across the  state for water to flow naturally stressing that government will not relent in performing its responsibilities of maintaining flood free and clean environment.

The Commissioner and his team also checked the on-going  pumping station project at Illubirin where he said the civil construction of the project has been completed adding that it only requires mechanical installation to get the station running.

“The equipments are here; the generator and the transmitter are also ready; once connection is done, we will open the outlet and this will also compliment the urban regeneration efforts to deflood lagos Island” he said.

He implored the community to take ownership of the  the project by preventing indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage channels, road medians and setbacks stressing that it is the responsibility of the community to maintain the project to ensure its sustainability.

He said the government would continue to ramp up it advocacy on indiscriminate waste disposal and appealed to journalists to support the government in doing same.

The Special adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu  appealed to residents of Lagos Island bear with government when the project commences saying  achieving these projects  may come with some pains but it will be beneficial to all residents on the long run.

“We need to have a change in attitude to protect our environment because it is our land and our future” he said.
