Barcelona Eye Szczesny To Replace Injured Ter Stegen

Barcelona has set its sights on Wojciech Szczesny as a potential solution to their goalkeeper crisis following Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury

The German shot-stopper was stretchered off during Barcelona’s 5-1 triumph over Villarreal on Sunday, casting doubt over his availability for the remainder of the season.

In a Monday statement from the club’s website, Barça announced, “The Barça goalkeeper will undergo a surgical process on Monday following the knee injury sustained in the game against Villarreal.”

Tests have revealed the full extent of the damage. “Tests carried out on the first team player Marc ter Stegen confirm that he has a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee,” the statement added.

In the aftermath of the injury, Fabrizio Romano on Tuesday via X revealed that Barcelona has approached Szczesny’s agents, CAA Stellar, to explore possible terms.

Szczesny, who had announced his retirement earlier this summer, is now being reconsidered for a return to the pitch.

“Barça want to understand his situation,” Romano noted, as the club seeks an experienced replacement.

Other candidates on the list include Keylor Navas, with Barcelona evaluating all options to cover Ter Stegen’s absence.

The injury to their star keeper overshadowed a thrilling victory for Barcelona.

Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha each scored twice in a wild match at Villarreal, maintaining the team’s perfect start to the La Liga season. Lewandowski was instrumental, netting the first two goals, though he missed a penalty later on.

Pablo Torre and Raphinha added further goals to secure Barcelona’s sixth straight league win.

Despite the win, the injury to Ter Stegen looms large over Barcelona’s title aspirations.
