One Year Anniversary: Omisore Pleads For More Time For Tinubu
A former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Iyiola Omisore, on Friday appealed to Nigerians to give President Bola Tinubu more time as he continues to take ‘bold moves’ to reposition Nigeria’s ailing economy.
The former Osun deputy governor also stressed that it would be wrong for people to mount pressure or see the President as a dullard who probably doesn’t know when to rejig his cabinet when the need arises.
Omisore, who unceremoniously resigned from his position as national secretary of the ruling APC in 2023, made the appeal when he featured as a guest on ‘Inside Sources with Laolu Akande,’ a socio-political programme aired on Channels Television every Friday.
He said, “The issue of rejigging the cabinet is the prerogative of the President. The constitution says that the ministers hold their posts at the pleasure of the President because he (Tinubu) is engaging too. He knows the feedback from the people. He knows what to do at the right time and our President today is smart.
“He is not a dullard; he knows what he wants and for what purposes. And I am sure if he deems fit that he has to rejig his cabinet, he will have to do it. That is why you see the ministers correcting themselves. So far, it is a work in progress.”
To further buttress his point, Omisore cited a few personalities in Tinubu’s cabinet including the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, who he described as a professional fit for the ministry.
According to him, it is not enough for people to sit in their comfort zone and conclude that all the president’s 47 ministers are not performing.
“The minister of works is a professional engineer. That is the way you put professionals in ministries and make the job easier. When you put square pegs in square holes from day one, it is a work in progress. But when you bring a doctor to another ministry, there will be issues.
“Once they have been chosen as ministers, for them to be outstanding is a minimum requirement. It’s only when they fall short that there is an issue,” he said.
Continuing, the South West politician argued that the President deserves kudos instead of the knocks he is receiving from several quarters over his decision to remove the contentious petrol subsidy and floating of the naira a few months into his administration.
The APC chief also pleaded that Tinubu should be given more time for his economic policies to start bringing in the needed dividend, as ‘Rome was not built in a day.’
