UNICEF To Immunise 181,000 Children In Borno
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has planned to immunise 181,000 children against six-child killer diseases in Borno State.
The beneficiaries would be drawn from Jere, Gubio, Konduga, Mafa, Monguno and Ngala local councils.
This was disclosed, Saturday, by the UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, as part of activities to mark the 2023 World Humanitarian Day (WHD) in Maiduguri.
According to her, the targeted eight councils in the state recorded the highest number of children not vaccinated, with Nigeria having seven million children not vaccinated, the highest in the world.
She added that UNICEF would accelerate the registration of births in Borno State with a target of 250,000 this year.
She also stated that a lot more still needed to be done by the federal and state governments, UN and individuals in the insurgency affected communities in the North-East region.
On the humanitarian needs of the two million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), she said that 1.4 million children needed psychosocial support, education, nutrition and WASH sectors.
Citing the Ngala community, she said the settlements near the IDP camps were in dire need of humanitarian services in the area of health, nutrition and WASH sectors.
She was, however, impressed by the resilience of the residents despite the challenges they face in the IDP camps as well as liberated communities.
She saluted all the humanitarian workers, who have stood firm despite the risks involved in serving the people of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
