UNILAG Students Lament Online Registration Glitches
Some undergraduates of the University of Lagos have been thrown into confusion after the school management said they would defer a semester for failure to register their courses on the school’s portal.
However, contrary to the management’s claims, some of the affected students, while lamenting over the development, said they registered their courses on the portal at the commencement of the semester.
As the academic session was ongoing, the students said they started experiencing challenges registering their courses on the school’s portal.
The students said the challenges included not seeing the courses they registered on the portal, seeing some elective courses and only old course codes.
One of the victims, a 300-level student, who pleaded anonymity for fear of victimisation, said he registered his courses on February 8, adding that when he logged into the portal to print his docket a week before the examination, his docket tab was missing.
He said, “I refreshed the page thinking the site was experiencing a glitch but the docket tab still didn’t appear. I thought there might be traffic caused by other students trying to generate their dockets so I logged out to try again later.”
According to him, all attempts to generate the docket were futile, adding that when the school portal was reopened, it was only for editing courses.
He said, “Those who benefitted were those who had about two or three courses reflecting on their portals. For us who had none, we could not re-register our courses afresh.
“We again notified the school management about this issue but they were determined to see us all as unserious students who failed to meet the school’s deadline.”
The undergraduate said when they planned a meeting with the Vice Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, on June 5, to seek his assistance on the matter, the Director of Student Affairs showed up to inform them to defer the semester.
Another affected student studying law in the institution, said, “It is clear that I am suffering from the inadequacies of UNILAG. If I didn’t register for my courses as they claim, let them explain how and why a department’s whole examination would clear and the department had to rewrite their examinations.”
The spokesperson for the school, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, in a statement sent to our correspondent, said the school’s academic portal was reopened four times for students who weren’t able to register and edit their courses.
The statement read in part, “Almost immediately after the closure of the portal for the third time, management was inundated by claims of computer/internet glitches and the disappearance of registered courses from the registration forms on some students’ portals.
“As a result, the portal was re-opened the fourth time to allow students with such issues to edit their course registration appropriately from 6pm, Wednesday, May 31, to 11.59 pm on Thursday, June 1, 2023.”
