FG Approves N6.5bn Airstrip For Yobe

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe on Thursday commended the Federal Government for approving over N6.5bn for the construction of Wachakal Airstrip in Nguru Local Government Area of the state.

Buni’s commendation is contained in a statement by his Director-General, Press and Media Affairs, Mamman Mohammed, and released to newsmen in Damaturu on Thursday.

The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, had said on Wednesday that the Federal Executive Council had approved N6.3bn for the actual construction work and N219.8bn for the post-construction services of the project.

“And in our drive to develop the sector and ensure connectivity within our region and also improve on our security architecture, and also attend to various needs of civilization, we found this airport and many others coming across the country useful,” Sirika said.

The governor said that the need for an airport in the state was strategic and necessary for security and economic benefits.

“An airport in the state will enhance easy movement of security personnel and equipment to fight terrorism and cross border crimes, among others.

“Our people will also take advantage of the airport for the movement of their goods and services.

“Yobe state has one of the finest Sesame seeds, hides and skin as well as livestock in Nigeria; the airport will certainly facilitate local and international trades in this direction,” Buni said.

The governor also commended President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress administration for its commitment to national development.

He assured the president of the support, co-operation and loyalty of the government and people of Yobe.
