OAUTHC Successfully Manages 101-year-old Woman With COVID-19 – CMD
The Chief Medical Director (CMD), Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) Ile-Ife, Prof Victor Adetiloye, has disclosed that the hospital has successfully managed a 101-year-old woman with COVID-19.
Adetiloye while speaking with newsmen in Ile-Ife noted that such a fit has never been achieved anywhere in Nigeria adding that the elderly woman was brought from a private hospital in a state of comma, already placed on oxygen when she was admitted.
He added that COVID-19 has been the challenges facing countries globally and people with advanced age and different ailments are prone to contract it.
The CMD disclosed that adults of any age with the following conditions: cancer, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, down syndrome, heart condition such as heart failure, coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathies are at increased risk of severe illness from the virus that causes COVID-19.
The CMD further disclosed that there was no record of casualty in the hospital throughout the first wave of COVID-19, from April to Nov, 2020 in which 120 patients were treated adding that 125 of the second wave that was so severe all over the world were also treated without any casualty.
The CMD stated that for the fact that one is tested positive for COVID-19 is not a death sentence, saying the personnel in Nigeria are capable of handling the pandemic successfully.
He commended Federal Government, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Ministry of Health for their support and for producing the facilities and drugs needed for the patients.
