Wife Seeks Dissolution Of 10-year-old Marriage
A 33-year-old housewife, Rabiu Tosin, on Tuesday asked an Ado-Ekiti Customary Court to dissolve her 10-year-old marriage to her husband, Ayodeji over alleged frequent beatings and pubic disgrace.
She said her husband had been beating her since she married him, but endured thinking that he would change.
“There was a time i went to the market , before I came back, he had packed some of my belongings out of the house.
“When i begged him to bring out the remaining things, he brought out a pipe and started beating me and seized my phone,” she said.
Tosin said she called her grandmother to intervene but he locked the door and asked my grandmother to go away.
According to her, the cause of their fight was mainly based on money, as he does not give them feeding allowance.
She added that whenever she refused him sex, he would not give her money to cook for the week.
The petitioner said that her husband had moved their children to his mother’s house, and expressed the fear that they would not be well taken care of.
Tosin, therefore, prayed the Court to separate them and award her the custody of the three children.
The respondent, Ayodeji, 37, resident of No 42, Omisanjana, Ado-Ekiti, denied beating his wife constantly saying that he had only beaten her once.
He said his wife was temperamental and fond of fighting other tenants and their landlords, a situation had caused the couple to be ejected frequently.
He said that his wife was also adulterous, informing the court that a woman had fought her to stop dating her husband.
“I have never disgraced my wife, instead when we have any disagreement, she leaves the house,” he said.
Ayodeji said he was in support of the dissolution and prayed for the custody of the children.
The President of the court, Mrs Olayinka Akomolede, adjourned the case until April 4, for judgment.
