10-yr-old Emerges Mathematics Competition Winner
The 2019 edition of The Ultimate Mathematics Ambassador (TUMA) mathematics competition held for primary school pupils in the South-West region has ended.
The annual mathematics competition, organized by The Ambassadors Schools, Ota, Ogun State and in its seventh edition, had over 400 public and private schools drawn from Ogun and Lagos states participating.
Pupils between ages 5 and 10 took part in this exercise.
Considering the large number of entries, the organizers took the pupils through different stages until the list of ten finalists was arrived and presented in the prize-giving ceremony without the slightest knowledge of who emerged winner.
At the end, 10-year-old Madumere Rejoice Ngozi of Giant Strides Nursery & Primary School, Ifo emerged winner and thus becomes the 2019 The Ultimate Mathematics Ambassador.
She won the star prize of N500, 000 and a plaque while her school got a laptop, printer, textbooks and plaque.
Also rewarded was her mathematics teacher who went home with N150, 000 plus a plaque.
The first runner-up, 9-year-old Enwere Kingsley Ikenna, from Cuddly Kids, went home with N300, 000 plus a plaque, while the school got a laptop, textbooks and a plaque.
His efforts fetched his teacher N100, 000 and a plaque. Emerging the second runner-up with N200, 000 and a plaque was Olawale Oyindamola Hann, aged 10, from Vickstell International School, Ikorodu, Lagos.
Her school got a printer, textbooks and plaque while the teacher got N75, 000 and a plaque for his effort. Interestingly, the organizers gave the 4th to 10th position N50, 000 each for making the top 10 list while their teachers got N25, 000 each.
In his welcome address, Chairman of The Ambassadors Schools, Mr. Samson Yomi Osewa, said, ‘’As an institution, we recognize that inculcating strong mathematical skills during childhood is the foundation of attaining prominence in life. Consequently, the TUMA vision is as pertinent today as when it was conceived.”
The guest speaker and chairman of the occasion, E. O. Odebunmi, a professor of chemistry, in his lecture titled, ‘Mathematics: the bedrock of national development,’ stressed the need for teaching of mathematics in schools.
